The bonfire rivalry on the beaches of Duindorp and Scheveningen started in 1990 and is separated by a harbor. Over time, wooden pallets became a favored material, a convenient medium for the working class communities that were behind the two apartment-sized bonfire towers. It wasn’t long before they became the largest in the world by volume. I spent a few years documenting its community in Scheveningen before it was banned in 2019.
