The bonfire rivalry started on the beach in 1990 and is separated by a harbor. Christmas trees were traded for wooden pallets and these days, the two apartment-sized bonfire towers they build are routinely the largest in the world. There’s no books about the Kerstbomenjacht madness that led to this, nor the bonfire rivalry, so I took it upon myself to document it. Since my family roots are in Scheveningen, I decided to focus on their side of the story. Here’s a few of the photos I made the first year that I went there.
